Our Professionals

Sir James Dewar, the renowned Scottish chemist and physicist (1842-1923), invented the thermos flask also known as the Dewar or vacuum flask in 1892. Designed to store liquid gases at extremely low temperatures, its primary function is to thermally insulate contents by preventing heat transfer in or out of the flask.

As shown in the illustration below, radiation is minimized by silvering the internal glass surfaces, which reflect radiant heat waves. Various insulation materials reduce heat transfer through conduction, convection, and radiation to differing extents, resulting in unique thermal performance and "R" values. Reflective insulation, in particular, targets radiant heat transfer across open spaces, with its low emittance metal surface blocking over 94% of radiant energy, significantly reducing heat flow.

Reflective Insulation vs. Mass Insulation

Mass insulation, like a foam cup, works by trapping air and provides a measurable R-value, which slows heat transfer. In contrast, the reflective lining of a thermos jug keeps liquids hot or cold by reflecting heat inward or outward.
